A Classic 8 Title was on the line at Waukesha West as the Wolverines hosted the Catholic Memorial Crusaders. West came into the game looking for their first outright conference championship since 2011 and they accomplished their goal by defeating CMH 20-7.
It was a defensive struggle throughout the first half as both teams held each other in check. With a 0-0 score, West received the second half kickoff. The Wolverines proceeded to take the ball 80 yards in 5:38 and scored on a Peter MacCudden 16 yard touchdown run. Catholic Memorial was stymied on offense and West took their next possession and scored once again, this time on a Tyler Zirpoli run with 9:38 left in the 4th quarter. The Crusaders were determined to make it a game and they cut the lead in half on a 71 yard pass from Ben Nimz to Luke Fox to cut the West lead in half. With the clock winding down and West driving, Catholic Memorial had the opportunity to get the ball back in their own territory with some time left on the clock. On 4th and 1, Coach Steve Rux called a halfback pass and Peter MacCudden hit Tyler Leitner in the back of the end zone for the final score of the ball game.
The win keeps West undefeated at 9-0 while Catholic Memorial falls to 7-2 and into a 2nd place tie with Muskego in the Classic 8. All three teams will be in action next week as the WIAA Level 1 playoffs begin.
