McCarthy: Packers backup quarterback Brett Hundley 'could have been better prepared'

The coach of the Green Bay Packers intimated in his NFL Combine press conference that his backup quarterback should have been better prepared to play "relief pitcher" for the second half of the 2017 season.

Mike McCarthy appeared careful to not specifically pin blame upon Brett Hundley in his talk at the annual scouting event in Indianapolis, but seemed to discuss the football operations in general when it came to finding a plan B after the shoulder injury to starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"We felt he could have been better prepared. We've got to make sure that doesn't happen again, as a whole as far as our whole operation," the coach said.

"You look at the evaluation, where he started, how he ended the season, he definitely improved."

McCarthy stressed competition will step up at quarterback in the final year of Hundley's contract, but that he has faith in the backup to Rodgers.

"I believe in Brett Hundley, but I do recognize he has a lot of football in front of him. He has a big upside."
