Hurricane Florence is set to make landfall tonight off the coast of North Carolina.
Many have been watching the storm since last week, causing thousands of Carolinians to evacuate west.
Among those was John Malan, retired meteorologist for TODAY's TMJ4. He and his family live in The Outer Banks, barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina.
Malan joined WTMJ's John Mercure Thursday afternoon to share why he left his home. Listen to their conversation above.
