Pearl Harbor: Survivor Interviews

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, several military members from Wisconsin were on hand.

Over the years, the members of the WTMJ news staff have had the privilege of interviewing many survivors from the area.

Julius Finnern served on the USS Monaghan.  He was on the opposite side of the Oahu island when the Japanese bombed the USS Arizona.

"When she blew up, I think they heard that explosion in Nebraska," Finnern told WTMJ in 2006.  The Navy veteran passed away in 2012.

Every survivor we have spoken with had a different experience that fateful day, however there was one commonality: There was no fear.

"I wasn't scared at all," one survivor told us.

"You didn't have time (to be scared)," said another.  "You had to do your job."
