Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett: "It's time for people to come down and hop on The Hop"

It’s a milestone day for Milwaukee's streetcar, The Hop MKE. A grand opening kickoff event starts today at noon.

It will begin by serving areas like East Town, the Third Ward and various points in downtown. Expansion plans are already in place to cover a wider swath of the Metro Milwaukee area.

There will be five 67-foot long vehicles that can carry up to 150 passengers each, plus space for bicycles, wheel chairs and strollers.

They are scheduled to arrive at the stops every 15 minutes, depending on the traffic and the stoplights.

For this first year, the fares will be free for everyone.  After that, it'll be $1 a ride.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett joined Wisconsin’s Morning News for much more on the launch of the Hop. You can listen to the full interview below.
