In 1979 the Minnesota Twins selected outfielder Kevin Brandt out of Nekoosa High School with the 11th overall pick in Major League Baseball's amateur draft.
A whopping 37 years later, Gavin Lux, a short stop from Kenosha Indian Trail High School became the second Wisconsin prep player to be selected in the first round. Lux was selected 20th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
So why the gap?
There are a variety of reasons, but one that immediately comes to mind is weather.
Historically, Wisconsin winters challenge one's ability to do anything more than take swings in the cage and throw off a plastic mound in a converted warehouse. In 1993, Hitter's Baseball Academy opened in Racine with the goal of improving the brand of baseball played by Wisconsin's youth.
