Changing Face of Milwaukee: Greendale and Greenfield

GREENDALE - Some of the most noticeable development in the area is happening at Southridge Mall, which is in the middle of some major changes.

It all started four years ago.

"That renovation included a complete transformation of all four of the mall entrances, a brand new food court with seating and lighting, a brand new family fun area, all new lighting throughout the mall, carpet, and tile, and beautiful glass railings," said Mary Mokwa, general manager at Southridge Mall.

More work is underway right now.

"We have a brand new Marcus theater starting construction and we've got approximately six new stores that are currently under construction, including an exciting new Explorium brewpub," said Mokwa.

There are also new high-end apartments planned for an area just east of the mall. It's all part of an effort to attract and keep young people in the area.

"The kids that grew up in Greendale, the first thing they usually say to us is, 'I'm not staying here,'" said village president Jim Birmingham.

He wants to change that by offering more goods and services that are attractive to a younger crowd.

"It's all within walking distance," said Birmingham. "We'll have it all."
